Yesterday the Vendee Globe Race started from Les Sables d’Olonne in France with 33 skippers taking on the challenge of the single handed non stop race around the world.

Originally called The Globe Race, it first took place in 1989 and was won by Frenchman Titouan Lamazou , who took 109 days and 8hrs to complete the challenge. Nowadays the race is much slicker with the last race in 2016/2017 only taking Frenchman Armel Le Cleac’h 74 days and 3 hours!

This year there are 4 British skippers hoping to be crowned the winner:

• Miranda Merron – Campagne de France
• Pip Hare – Medallia
• Samantha Davies – Initiatives

No I’m not talking about the ‘Covid’ word but the other C word – CHRISTMAS!

I know it’s only October but many of us are already thinking about the festive season and how it’s probably going to be much different from previous years. So if you are looking for something different then why not browse through my lovely products to send someone an unusual gift this year.

The Beach Bags and are a relatively new addition to my products and I love making them!

Along time ago I picked up some old rope at a car boot sale and my intention was always to make a bag of some description and use the rope as a handle. It wasn’t until earlier this year that I decided on making the beach bag – must have been the inspiration of the sunny weather we had!

Using sail cloth means these bags are used to the all weathers, although not classed as waterproof they will offer some protection to the contents from the elements. They are a decent size (42cm x 32cm x 23cm) so you can fit everything inside that is needed for a day at the beach. Generally they will always be white on one side with a colour on the opposite side (this will depend on the colour of sails I have at the time)

Another lovely shop is now selling Out of Sails products! Always Plastic Free was opened to raise awareness of how much plastic is used and how we can cut down on our use of single use plastic. If you are near to Warsash in Hampshire you can visit Always Plastic Free to see some of my items for sale. They are open from 0900 to 1600 Monday to Saturday.

They have lots of other lovely products in stock and all environmentally friendly, a great place to have a browse (socially distanced of course!)

I am the owner of Out of Sails and in 2018 I started making these lovely items from used sails when I inherited a sewing machine and came across some old sails.

I grew up in the West Midlands so nowhere near any sea but in a moment of madness my parents, who had never sailed before, decided to buy a boat, a decision they would never regret.  The boat was launched in the April whilst my Mum was pregnant with me so I have been boating all my life.

Roll on a few years and I moved to Portsmouth to start working in the marina industry.  I have owned two sail boats, a Jaguar 21 and a Feeling 286 both of which I skippered in the Round the Island Race a couple of times. 

Starting Out of Sails came by accident, I had never done anything like this before but thought I would give it a go and see what happens!  I made a few bags for friends who thought they were great and encouraged me to have a go at making more items. Their critique helped me develop the products I have for sale today.

I really enjoy making each of these products (I do have my favourites) especially when I have coloured sails as they look so different.  Each one really is unique as it has its own distinguishing marks and character, unfortunately I don’t always know the history of the sail.  Just use your imagination to decide which oceans it has sailed. I do hope you like all of the products I make and if you would like a bespoke item then I am always happy to discuss

I’m excited to announce that as of today (1st July 2020) you’ll be able to purchase my products from a NEW local craft shop called Jen Creates. It’s a very quaint shop with lots of original character and a perfect spot as it’s right on the waterfront of Portsmouth Harbour

You can find Jen Creates at Hardway Business Centre, Priory Road, Hardway, Gosport, Hampshire, PO12 4LF. For those that are local to the area it’s right next to Hardway Sailing Club.

Most of my products will be on display so you will be able to see how they look and feel in real life and not just in photos! If you pop down and find something you like but you would prefer a different colour then please contact me and I will be able to let you know the colours I have available.

As well as Out of Sails there will be a number of other local artists who will be selling their products including Jen’s own creations of driftwood houses and wall art.

A cloth face covering should cover your mouth and nose while allowing you to breathe comfortably. It can be as simple as a scarf or bandana that ties behind the head.

Wash your hands or use hand sanitiser before putting it on and after taking it off. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth at all times and store used face coverings in a plastic bag until you have an opportunity to wash them.

Do not touch the front of the face covering, or the part of the face covering that has been in contact with your mouth and nose. Once removed, make sure you clean any surfaces the face covering has touched.

You should wash a face covering regularly. It can go in with other laundry, using your normal detergent.

When wearing a face covering, take care to tuck away any loose ends.

Along with the Pouch the Tote Bag was one of the first items I made from sails. I made a few bags for friends from a huge spinnaker sail I had acquired and they thought they were great and encouraged me to have a go at making more items. Their critique helped me develop the products I have for sale today. 

I thought the size (38cmx36cm) would be a useful when you are just popping out and need to collect a few items, it’s not too big and it’s not too small.  All of the bag is made, including the handles, from lightweight spinnaker sail so it hardly takes up any room when not in use. 

I just made a basic bag to start with and after further consultation with friends they suggested it needed a storage pouch when not in use.  The design I use today has a storage pouch which is attached to the bag so it folds away neatly when not in use.

I always have one of these tote bags with me as they are so useful, I love seeing them take shape and try to use a little bit if colour wherever possible although this does depend on the sails I have at the time.
